WordPress software is completely free to download, install, and use because it is open source software. However, building a live website requires paying for web hosting, a custom domain name, and optional premium themes or plugins. If you use the hosted version on WordPress.com, a free basic plan is available, but paid plans offer extra features. Overall, while the core software costs nothing, running a self hosted site involves small ongoing operational expenses.
